We think it’s stupid when people make a big deal about their “numbers.”

Remember that Anna Faris movie where the entire plot was based on the fact that a single woman in her 30s (in the twenty-first century, we hasten to remind you!) was rapidly approaching 20 sexual partners, and thus had cause to freak out? Even though, assuming she had her first sexual partner at the legal, consenting age of 18, 20 sexual partners would mean fewer than two sexual partners a year over the course of 12 years, which, in our book (in any book), is not that promiscuous? Certainly nothing to base an entire movie on!

But even if you average out to way more than two sexual partners a year (maybe you have two sexual partners a month), we still think that your sex life is your sex life! As long as you’re making the right choices for yourself, the number of sexual partners you’ve had is nothing to stress about, and moreover, nobody’s business but yours.

….Except, we kind of want to know your number.

Because, while we totally discourage you (or anyone!) from drawing conclusions based on your individual number, the collective numbers of a large group of you is when things start to get interesting.

How many partners have women in the Southwest had? How many partners have men in New York had? What constitutes “a lot”? How do people, en masse, feel about their numbers?

This is fascinating stuff, and data we’d like to share with you once we’ve collected and parsed the results.
