Marina Diamandis of Marina and the Diamonds is on fire. She’s been pumping us up to addictive tunes like “I Am Not A Robot” and “Oh No!” for a few years now (just try to listen to “Primadonna” without dancing in your seat), and her second album, Electra Heart, was just released here in this country after hitting #1 in the UK and Ireland. Now she’s on the road, headlining venues across the US on her Lonely Hearts Club Tour. “The theme of heartbreak and the idea of being alone runs through the whole album in a tragi-comic way. It’s a human thing to fear both states of being — we all relate to that,” she said. We talked to her about her seriously catchy music and dug into what it’d be like to date her. (We definitely want to date her.)

You probably like her music now, but you’ll like her even more after reading about what she has to say. The heartbreak, she says, comes not from a recent relationship, “but some songs are based on someone I briefly dated before I wrote the album.”

Marina shared with us 5 things that she thinks you should know about dating a pop star.

They Are Going To Write About Their Relationships.

“I’d prefer to not be so blunt, but I can’t write in any other way, unfortunately! I’ve never been intentionally mean about someone. I just see things how they are, and honesty is something you can’t really compromise in songwriting, else you won’t achieve that bonafide connection with the listener. Music is one of the few areas of my life where I am unguarded and ultimately, connected to how I really feel. It’s easy to mask how you feel in everyday life.”

Maybe Don’t Take Them To A Concert On The First Date. (COOK FOR THEM.)

“I love to go to shows with guys, it’s a great idea if you are dating that person already. But probably not so much for a first date. My idea of a perfect date is being cooked for… That or hanging out in a dive bar. Anything that isn’t formal. I hate the kind of formal-pretense-thing. Makes me feel very awkward!”

You Might Have To Compete With Their Career

“I don’t like the idea of choosing between career or love, but one always gets more attention than the other. Right now, I’m having the busiest year of my life.  I think it’s possible to have both, but I think the balance shifts in accordance with what’s going on with your career, really.”

They WILL Date People Who Aren’t That Into Music

“The idea of going out with someone who isn’t the slightest bit creative interests me — you learn about a whole different life, and world. Opposites attract! The majority of the boys I’ve dated have been creative though.”
