6 Musical Celebrity Couples You Can’t Help But Crush Onby Kenneth Partridge on July 31, 2012
Crushes aren’t just for individuals. Sometimes, couples find themselves smitten with other couples, lusting after their clothes, haircuts, social circles, sophisticated tastes, and overall lifestyles — if not their bodies. This phenomenon is especially common among music lovers, as the pop universe is populated by plenty of ridiculously cool romantic pairings.
Discounting lovebirds that play in the same bands — that’s another topic for another day — we’ve compiled a list of our musical couple crushes. You and your boo might never be as badass as the amorous duos below, but at least you’ve got something to strive for.
Brandon Welchez of Crocodiles & Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls
Why they’re awesome: Both of their bands do ‘60s bubblegum rock with a gothy, punky, Cali-noir edge. That makes them fundamentally cooler than sunny SoCal rivals Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast and Nathan Williams of Wavves, though we like them, too.
What to copy: Their black-on-black, vintage-on-vintage wardrobe. Never leave home without those Wayfarers.
Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose
Why they’re awesome: Wiz isn’t just the smoothest rapper since fellow weed enthusiast Snoop Dogg, his collaborator on last year’s Mac and Devin Go to High School soundtrack. The Pittsburgh MC also has killer style, and now that he’s engaged to exotically beautiful model, actress, and aspiring singer Amber Rose, he’ll have plenty of occasions to showcase his hipster-thug look.
What to copy: The duds and ‘dos are hard to cop — especially her signature close-cropped blonde cut — so try adopting their laid-back swagger. He’s got a song called “Work Hard, Play Hard,” and she’s emerging as a showbiz triple-threat, but these two make it look easy.
Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age & Brody Dalle of the Distillers
Why they’re awesome: Homme is a motorcycle-riding, pompadour-sporting, desert-dwelling stoner-rock renaissance man, and the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer has himself an equally bitchin’ bride. Dalle has been quiet in recent years — she’s raising a couple of kids, OK, so get off her goddamn back — but those Distillers and Spinnerette discs rock hard enough to tide us over until her return.
What to copy: Domesticity done right. They’re proof you can get married, have kids, and still be rock ‘n’ roll.
Elvis Costello & Diana Krall
Why they’re awesome: He’s Elvis Costello — ’nuff said. She’s an acclaimed jazz singer and pianist whose talent is matched only by her beauty. They got hitched on Elton John’s estate and count Tony Bennett among their friends. Peruse their record collections, and you’ll find Chopin filed next to the Clash filed next to Ornette Coleman. That is, of course, if you’re lucky enough to get invited over.
What to copy: Curiosity, cultural omnivorousness, graceful aging: Take your pick.
Ryan Adams & Mandy Moore
Why they’re awesome: He’s a hardscrabble troubadour handy with everything from alt-country hooks to heavy metal riffs, and while she’s never quite broken out as a superstar singer or actress, she’s cuter than you remember and more talented than she gets credit for (Remember Saved?) Moore has said she’s working with her hubby on her next album, and whether they go for thrash, twang, or pop, we’re thinking it’ll surprise some people.
What to copy: They’re an unlikely couple, but they don’t seem to care what anyone thinks.
Jay-Z & Beyonce
Why they’re awesome: It’s not the fame or money that make Hova and Bey such an enviable couple. These two look like they’re having fun, and now that their family unit has a third member, young Blue Ivy Carter, expect rap’s premiere mogul and R&B’s biggest star to grow even crazier in love and find new ways to run the world.
What to copy: The way they support and complement each other.
