Amateur photographer Angila Golik was taking pictures in D.C. on July 2 when she “spotted” (eavesdropped upon) a man in military uniform proposing to a woman at the Washington War Memorial. She watched him kneel down and pop the question, taking a few pictures while it was happening.

If I had witnessed the proposal, I’m not sure what I would have felt or what I would have done. But I don’t think I would have taken pictures.  And I definitely don’t think I would do what Golik did next: she created a “LOVE STORY” YouTube video and brought it to the Huffington Post, claiming she is “searching” for them to give them their photo, as if they are missing persons.

It seems like the couple wanted a private moment, no? That is exactly what Golik stumbled upon. And it was private, until Golik made it not. It wasn’t a proposal like the viral video proposals we’ve been seeing. If the mystery couple wanted that, they would have done it. They could have brought a photographer. It seems like this “search for the missing love birds” is more of a publicity stunt for Golik.

I know that most people love this story and that it’s a beautiful moment and that this couple might really want to see these candid photos of one of the most important milestones in their lives. But we don’t know that. What if they wanted this moment to be just between the two of them? Well it’s too late for that. But moving forward, I think we should leave them alone.
