Michelle Duggar’s Marriage “Guide” Sets Women Back to Pre-Suffrage Eraby Walker James Loetscher on February 17, 2012
For those of you wondering what kind of insanity could inspire a couple to have “19 Kids and Counting” (Tuesdays; TLC), here’s your answer. Apparently Michelle Duggar — the show’s ultra-conservative mother — handed out a “Seven Basic Needs of a Husband” guide when she spoke about how to have a “healthy” Christian marriage at a recent conference (as seen on this season’s premier).

The language of the supposed “guide” is downright terrifying, advising women to be little more than submissive playthings to their breadwinning husbands. “Reassure your husband that you understand and believe that he is your God-given leader” and “Never ask others for counsel without your husband’s approval” she extolls, among other grossly extremist views. For God’s sake (figure of speech, here), can someone get this woman a copy of Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening?”
I like to think that our country’s adherence to outdated ideas on gender roles has come a long way in my lifetime/the last hundred years/this millennium, but reading something like this (tip of the cap to Faith Goes Pop for unearthing it) indicates we still have a long way to go.
