When my friend asked his girlfriend to marry him on the top of a Ferris Wheel with his entire family waiting at the bottom, I rolled my eyes. I don’t understand why people pop the question at football stadiums or on the Kiss Cam. Elaborate engagements, I think, are creepy. Why do they have to be such an exhibition? If a couple is that concerned about showiness, I often wonder about their relationship.

I want to hate this latest viral marriage proposal from Isaac Lamb, who asked his girlfriend Amy to marry him with the help of dancing neighbors and friends while she rode in the back of a van, but I don’t. It’s the definition of showy — at press time, more than 5 million people had seen it. It involved more than 60 people and even was tweeted about by Bruno Mars himself. But my cynical little heart swells to think about all these people taking part in their engagement. I like the couple — I think they love each other and Isaac just wanted to do all he could to express how much he loved Amy. These people are part of the engagement, so it’s almost like Isaac and Amy have all of their support. And it’s so cute to see people who aren’t dancers, who just clearly love Isaac and Amy getting involved.

I don’t know who I’m trying to convince that this video is sweet — most of America is laughing, crying, and re-re-re-watching it. I guess I’m talking to you cynical people out there (like, usually me) who hate Bruno Mars and think marriage doesn’t need exhibitionism. Admit it: if this happened to you, you would sh*t your pants. I know I would.
