What You Should Watch This Weekend + Ranking the Most Romantic Batman Pairings
by Lindsey Weber and Bobby Finger on July 27, 2012
Editor’s note: Meet Lindsey and Bobby, two pop culture fanatics who’ll be sharing their date night movie picks with us each week. Check back next Friday for more — and in the meantime, don’t miss their previous post on why we owe so much to Nora Ephron and You’ve Got Mail.
Lindsey: Hey Bobby. Looking forward to the weekend? Any hot movie dates planned?
Bobby: Well, The Watch came out today. Vince Vaughn? Ben Stiller? A big “no” to that one. I’ve seen Ruby Sparks already, and that wasn’t anything special. I’m not sure if I can handle Step Up Revolution without having seen the earlier ones – will I be out of the loop? Actually, the best bet may be to just see The Dark Knight Rises again.
Lindsey: Is that even a good movie to see on a date though? I feel like it’s not.
Bobby: I think so! Maybe not for content — I doubt it’s in any way romantic — but in terms of cultural significance and post-movie chatter, it’s pretty good. So many conversations to be had! “Do you think it has a shot for a Best Picture nomination?” “Where do you think it stacks up with the rest of the series?” “Remember Heath Ledger?” “Is Tom Hardy hotter with or without the mask on?” “Joseph Gordon Levitt, yay or nay?” This movie is for EVERYONE. My parents haven’t seen a movie in theaters since The Blind Side and THEY were asking me about TDKR.
Lindsey: Oooh! Your parents are going on a hot date to see Batman?
Bobby: It was more like, “Should we see it?” I told them no.
Lindsey: Why not? I bet your parents could use a date night.
Bobby: Yeah, that’s why I recommended them renting Salmon Fishing in the Yemen this weekend. It’s out on DVD/On Demand.
Lindsey: What’s so romantic about fishing?
Bobby: WHAT’S ROMANTIC ABOUT FISHING? You’ve obviously never met Ewan McGregor’s character in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
Lindsey: I don’t feel and romantic feelings toward salmon. Or Ewan.
Bobby: You’re such an Emily Blunt in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen before she falls for Ewan.
Lindsey: Can you imagine you’re going on a date and they’re all excited about Batman but you make them watch Salmon Fishing in the Yemen?
Bobby: I can imagine it being disappointing for some people, but for me, that’s a suitable substitution. Other movies ARE in theaters though, but no good movie wants to compete.
Lindsey: But for the greater audience, the audience who WANTS to see Batman so they can contribute to the general water cooler chatter, what do we think? Let’s recall all of the romantic Batman pairings and then we can determine the true romanticness factor and whether people should see this.
Bobby: Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger?
Lindsey: On a scale of roses that have been Kissed By Seal, I give them a 4 out of 5.
Bobby: Batman Returns was…Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer
Lindsey: Very sexy. Definitely 5 out of 5 Roses.
Bobby: Batman Forever! Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman.
Lindsey: Very sexy. I’ll give them another 5 out of 5 Roses. I guess these are some really plentiful Roses.
Bobby: Batman Begins was Katie Holmes and Christian Bale.
Lindsey: Ugh, not sexy at all. Very unsexy. 1 out of 5.
Bobby: The Dark Knight was Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale.
Lindsey: She’s sexy! He’s boring. 3 out of 5. And what about this weekend’s Batman? Will it be sexy enough for us? Enough for Seal?
Bobby: Well, this one’s Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway.
Lindsey: And isn’t she a superhero too? She’s not some typical damsel. And from what I hear, she’s dressed in leather, so…
Bobby: Yeah, I guess. I don’t know. Michelle Pfieffer was the same character.
Lindsey: But Anne is sexier? Wasn’t Alicia Silverstone also a leather-clad something?
Bobby: BATGIRL
Lindsey: Okay, forget that.
Bobby: I always forgot about Alicia Silverstone, actually. But one thing you should never forget is how great she is in Beauty Shop. Or how great Beauty Shop is in general.
Lindsey: Bobby.
Bobby: People should actually just rent Beauty Shop. I guarantee it won’t be checked out anywhere.
