Couple Crush: Ina Garten (The Barefoot Contessa) And Her Husband Jeffreyby Chiara Atik on March 18, 2011
Here’s the deal: The Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten and her husband Jeffrey are pretty much the best couple that ever lived.
They met when Ina was 15 (!) and visiting Dartmouth. The two exchanged letters for a YEAR, and then started dating when she was 16, and got married shortly after she enrolled in college.
The two each went on to have illustrious careers: Jeffrey was the Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade under the Clinton administration, and now serves as Dean of the Yale School Of Management; Ina cooked her way into our hearts by becoming the barefoot contessa.
The premise of Ina’s much beloved Food Network show is this: she bumbles around their idyllic East Hampton house, cooking something delicious like Mac N Cheese and caramel pecan sundaes, and then Jeffrey comes home and he eats it.
The best part — and herein lies the beauty of their relationship — is that even though Ina is a world-famous chef who presumably spends much of her life in the kitchen, at the end of each episode Jeffrey is completely surprised and delighted and touched to find his wife has prepared his favorite food for him!
Ina and Jeffrey’s relationship is so beloved that it’s been lovingly mocked on 30 Rock:
Is this the secret to everlasting love? Constantly trying to surprise or make your significant other happy (by cooking, or buying something, or doing something), while he or she reciprocates with complete and unwavering enthusiasm? It seems to have worked for Jeffrey and Ina!
