The East Bay plays second fiddle to SF too often, so we thought we’d ask East Bay resident and local songsmith David Berkeley to help his neighbors find sweet, sweet romance.

1. Sunset Swim

The date: How about we… have a sunset swim in Lake Anza when the weather gets nice, bring some wine, some bread, some cheese, avocados, prosciutto (if you eat meat), some chocolate, and a blanket; when it gets dark, head up to the observatory at the Chabot Science Center and watch the stars.

Why it’s great: Nothing breaks the ice like swimming, and nothing melts the ice like stars.

2, Ferry, Oysters, Gelato

The date: How about we… take the ferry from Oakland to San Francisco, drink margaritas out of plastic cups on the deck, eat oysters at hog island, then get gelato from Ciao Bella for the boat back after it gets dark and the city lights are on.

Why it’s great: It’s perfect: You relax on the boat. Get in the mood with a few oysters. Cleanse the palette with gelato. And then, who knows?

3. Making the Band

The date: How about we… pretend to start a band, learn some cheesy love song (maybe the Kenny Rogers classic, “Islands in the Stream”) and perform it at the open mic at the Freight and Salvage.

Why it’s great: If you like to play music, the thrill of a live performance is sure to generate a few sparks.
