Everyone Agrees That It’s Super Weird to Ask Someone Not to Shower Before a Second Date

Last week, in what was probably my favorite “Tell Me If You Think This Is Weird” ever, “Claire” from New York received a text from a guy before their second date, saying “Don’t shower.”

Weird, or a smooth move? The overwhelming majority of you agreed that, yes, obviously this is a very, very weird thing to do.

Some of you tried to justify his text with somewhat plausible scenarios…

“What if he was just warning her not to because they were going to get all sweaty/smelly otherwise: going running, muddy concert moshpit, a really good but clingy-smelling restaurant.” -Guessed

“Maybe he hates the smell of her shampoo or soap.” – Elizabeth

“Maybe he wanted to take a shower together?” -Rachel K

And a surprising number of people suggested that maybe the guy was planning on taking her paintballing.

But the majority agreed with one commenter, who sums it up with “Beyond weird.”

So, yes, it’s definitely a bizarre strategy, and not one that we’d normally recommend anyone ever try, especially after only one date.

But here’s the kicker: We followed up with Claire herself, who admitted that the line “actually kind of worked on me…”
