Happy Friday! In preparation for the long weekend, we’re bringing you the definitive guide to date night movies: A Guy’s Guide to 2011′s Most Tolerable RomComs, “Blue Valentine” and Nine Other Movies to Avoid At All Costs on Date Night, and the below. Enjoy!
Boys, you get cars. Girls, you get Ryan Gosling. You all get an amazing soundtrack, You’re welcome.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The art is beautiful, as is the story. The world Wes Anderson creates for Mr. Fox is romantic in a sweet, innocent way, and it will bring out the kid in both of you. Plus, you get George Clooney, sort of. His voice, anyway. Hot. Plus, you get George Clooney, sort of. His voice, anyway. Hot.
Zombies have taken over America! What an excellent beginning to a date night. Everybody loves a good zombie movie, and this one is the best for a date because it’s hilarious. This movie has Emma Stone before she got all TheHelp-y, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and one of the best Bill Murray appearances in the history of Bill Murray. Bonus: impress your date by watching the whole movie, past the credits, for a bonus scene. Man, this movie just won’t stop giving!
Betcha both of you haven’t seen Beetlejuice in awhile, and you’ll be pleasantly floored with how awesome and weird it is. Also, you’ll both be like, Is that Alec Baldwin? And it is! Plus, watching Beetlejuice on a date will supply you with endless opportunities to say “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle…” (you know the rest. No way I’m typing it out.)
Here’s a Schwarzenegger movie that boy guys and girls like. It’s seriously action packed without taking itself too seriously, and it’s sprinkled with tons of funny moments to lighten the mood.
Because they come from different planets, it’s rare for guys and girls to reach simultaneous cinematic orgasm. That’s why The Jerk is glorious. No one can deny its funniness, nobody doesn’t love Steve Martin, and nobody should die without seeing this movie. So if your date hasn’t seen it, your Jerk viewing will be like a huge milestone in his or her comedic film watching career.
Dumb and Dumber
Nothing is sexier than laughing, and Dumb and Dumber is one of the funniest, most highly quoted movie of our time. The soundtrack, too, is totally underrated and fantastic.
When Harry Met Sally
This movie is truly romantic, but not at all sappy, and it digs deep into the most important relationship issues in a real way. New Yorkers will love getting an 80’s-eye-view of their city, and that hilarious “Surrey With A Fringe On Top” is a humorous scene that was ahead of its time. Plus, guys will like Meg Ryan’s fake orgasm scene. And girls will like that part where Harry says, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Orisitjustme?
The Princess Bride
You’d think all fairytale movies would be a massive dose of both romance and adventure, but moth just take the sappy romance route. But with The Princess Bride, he thinks he’s watching a comedy (he’s right!), she thinks she’s watching a romance (she’s right!) and so both think they’re getting what they want, and they both are.
If you’re looking something that will chase your date into your arms or possibly even scare their pants off, this horror movie with Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Scatman Crothers at their best and most freaky selves is a winner. Just try not to get too weirded out by that gross nudie scene with the old woman coming out of the bathtub. That could be a total mood killer.
