Blogger Katie Heaney wrote up a funny exchange on her tumblr yesterday about helping her friend, “R”, through a break-up.

R: “Can you go on eBay and order me some Chupa-Chups?”

K: “Is eBay the first place you think we should go with this? I’ll check Amazon.”

R: “I don’t care if they’re used.”

K: “How many do you want? There’s a two-hundred count for $93.”

R: “That’s like a collector’s item, I am going to eat all of them.”

K: “OK there’s 15 for like…$8, or 50 for $19.”

R: “Let’s go 50.”

Oh man, I hope those Chupa-Chups make that poor girl feel better. Break-ups are obviously horrible, but the silver lining is being able to say, “Fuck it. I’m ordering 50 lollipops on Ebay and eating every last one of them,” that’s comforting. It’s nice to take care of yourself!

After disappointing turns in my love life, one thing I reach to for comfort is (this is embarrassing…) episodes of Friends on iTunes. (I don’t have a TV and refuse to buy the DVDs, cause, come on.)

I’m well-aware that Friends isn’t, like, cool anymore, and it’s not like I watch it every night. But something about the familiarity of the characters, the 90s nostalgia, and, to be perfectly honest, their ever-rotating love lives always manages to cheer me up a little bit. There’s constantly someone new around the bend for them, which makes me feel better about whatever break-up I’ve just been through.

After a break-up (or a bad date), what comfort items do you reach for?
