The Sadly Effective Pick-Up Line You’ve Probably Already Used
by Chiara Atik on November 21, 2011
Earlier today, I jokingly mentioned a generic text message as a comment on how romance might be dead.
As it turns out, yep, romance is dead, and the proof is in the fact that we’ve all apparently been sending out the same half-hearted, hungover pick-up text.

“Ugh, so hungover. You feeling ok?”
Admit it, how many of us have either received or sent this text?
“I’ve totally used that as a flirty text to a girl!” A male friend emailed me after reading the post. I asked him what sort of responses he gets. “Usually something along the lines of ‘Yeah, I feel awful too. What are you doing later?’ or ‘I had a great time last night!’, etc.”
And on tumblr, user TinyApartment responded:
“TMI but oh well: This is the most effective sexual initiation phrase used in my gross-old-married-person relationship. Both of us use it. Long live romance.” Later, she added, ” I am so glad to not be alone in feeling like death/dehydrated/sorta in the mood.”

Obviously, I’ve received this text, too. The sad thing is that I remember exactly where I was (lying prone on my couch) and what I was thinking (‘come faster, sweet death!’) when my phone buzzed with the text from a guy I’d drunkenly made out with the night before. And instead of being appalled by the lack of sentiment in his missive, I thought it was sweet. He was feeling awful, yet still mustered up the energy to reach out to me. Through that text, we suffered together, united in our hangover.
Tell me what you guys think: has that text ever popped up on your phone before? Was it effective? Is modern romance alive and well in your corner of the world? Sound off in the comments!
